An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but not the orthodontist. Apples should be avoided, as their hard texture may cause problems with your braces.

Types of Braces

Today orthodontic braces are much smaller and less obvious than those of the past.  Treatment is much gentler and requires less force to move teeth compared to treatment most patients previously experienced.  The orthodontic brackets that are used today can be metal, tooth coloured and low friction, free of ligatures (elastics).  The choice of brackets to be used depends of patient preference and what demands are create due to the treatment plan that is optimal for each person.

Metal brackets

Metal brackets are what most people visualize when discussing orthodontic treatment.  They have the advantage of being less bulky because of how they are cast.  They usually have lower friction which allow the wires to slide more easily during treatment.  They are also more durable in situations where there is the possibility that teeth may contact the bracket.

Ceramic (tooth coloured) brackets

Tooth coloured brackets are highly esthetic and blend into the surrounding tooth exceptionally well.  They are slightly more bulky than metal brackets and studies show that they have slightly more friction than metal brackets.  This can result in slightly slower tooth movement.  Since they are harder than tooth enamel there is the potential for damage to tooth enamel if the contact opposing teeth.  They are also slightly more brittle than metal brackets and can break more easily than metal brackets.

Low friction (no ligature) brackets

No ligature brackets are very low friction brackets and work exceptionally well in cases where alignment is required but very little change in the existing occlusion (bite) is desired.  They are slightly more bulky than traditional metal brackets.  Typically the coloured ligatures that most people associate with orthodontic treatment are not required or used with these brackets.
